I took the first step in getting into the university I want to go to. I am in the process of filling out the “common application” which the school uses and might I add, it’s a doozie!  I’ve filled out several applications for school, but nothing like this one. So, I’m down to personal essays, always a chore even though I like to write.

One of the writing questions was to elaborate on an activity that I submitted as things I’ve participated in. The most recent one I participated in was FSG and what I contributed to it during deployment. I wrote that a couple days ago and have been thinking about it ever since. Is it appropriate to introduce oneself as a milspouse who has participated in military functions?

Some people are supportive of the military while others are not; it’s been in history text books since… who can remember. I sometimes feel that it is a difficult road to travel, being a proud military spouse. I want to share my enthusiasm and gratefulness of our troops, but is it appropriate in this situation? I continue to wonder if I should delete the activity and change the response and elaborate on another activity.

Other activities that I ranked as being most important are religious activities. Before we moved I was actively involved in church between teaching Sunday School, attending church service/functions and being a member of a small group that met on Sunday evenings. I am strong in my faith and yet wonder if it is something that I should delve into in a college application. Not everyone believes what I believe so am I walking on yet another fine line?

The personal essay asks that I answer the questions of why I’m transferring to the school and the objectives I want to achieve. I can’t necessarily answer the question of why I’m transferring without stating that my husband is in the military and we were transferred. Military life (and my religious views) is a big priority in my life and I believe that they have shaped me to be who I am today. I would like to include it in my application but wonder if I’ll be scrutinized for being a military spouse. So you all tell me, do I include that I’m a milspouse or do I keep it out?
